Sustain the Cove
Goal: $2.5 million
“The sacrifice and vision of the Burgundy parents who formed Cooper’s Cove more than a half century ago provided a natural classroom to learn and grow for countless children those parents would never even meet, including my own. The B for Burgundy Campaign is my chance to do the same for generations to come.”
KEVIN METZ P’23
The Burgundy Center for Wildlife Studies impacts the environmental outlook and commitment of all who visit ‘the Cove’, whether one becomes a scientist or simply a better advocate for the sustainability of our planet.
While the Cove is first and foremost a nature sanctuary and natural setting, it requires basic infrastructure to operate—and the key Cove infrastructure has received minimal investment in the last half-century. Burgundy has completed a comprehensive master plan for the Cove, and our first priority is to replace the aged Lodge, which has outlived its effective lifespan.
In keeping with the beloved simplicity of the Cove and focus on immersion in nature, a new structure or structures replacing the old Lodge will retain an elemental design and preserve the immediacy to nature that defines the Cove experience.
The new structure or structures will include an updated kitchen and dining facilities, along with teaching and learning spaces and secure, weather- and animal-proof spaces for materials, equipment, and natural specimens. Additionally, we are planning for limited three- to four-season functionality so that researchers, educators, and students can have access to the sanctuary at all times of the year.
